Standards and Certifications for Cable Clamps: Guaranteeing Safety and Reliability
Back

The Value of Certifications for Cable Management

Cable clamps may appear to be simple fastening components, but their failure can have dramatic consequences for electrical installations. During a short circuit, fault currents generate electromagnetic forces that can reach hundreds of kilonewtons. These forces are applied almost instantaneously and oscillate in all directions, representing a fundamentally different load than the static tensile forces for which components are normally dimensioned.

In data centers, offshore installations, industrial facilities, and transport infrastructure, defective cable clamps can lead to costly downtime, hazardous situations, and in the worst case, fire. The difference between a certified and a non-certified product is not academic. It distinguishes components that have been validated under extreme conditions from products whose performance remains unproven.

Certifications provide objective evidence that products have been tested according to international standards by independent testing laboratories. For engineers, procurement specialists, and project managers, these certifications represent the assurance that selected components will perform as specified, even when conditions become extreme.

NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021: The International Standard

The standard NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021 specifies requirements and tests for cable cleats in electrical installations. This international standard applies to low-, medium-, and high-voltage cables and guarantees resistance to electromechanical forces during electrical faults.

The primary focus is short-circuit resistance. The test lasts 0.1 seconds, corresponding to five cycles at 50 hertz mains frequency. During the test, currents of tens of thousands of amperes are passed through cable clamps, creating magnetic fields that generate electromagnetic forces of up to hundreds of kilonewtons.

The difference from a mechanical tensile test lies in the dynamics. In a tensile test, force is applied gradually, whereas short-circuit forces are sudden and oscillating. A cable clamp that survives a tensile test does not automatically pass a short-circuit test at identical force values.

KOZ Products had short-circuit tests carried out at KEMA Laboratories (DNV-GL) in the Netherlands and at Schneider Electric under the supervision of SGS Belgium. This multi-laboratory approach provides additional validation.

The standard also specifies lateral load tests (grip under horizontal forces, 60 minutes at maximum temperature), axial load tests (grip under cable weight), UV resistance (700 hours of radiation), corrosion resistance (salt spray tests), and flame tests (self-extinguishing behavior).

KOZ Products is fully certified according to NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021 for its range from 11 to 160 millimeters. The glass-fiber reinforced polyamide retains its mechanical properties between -80°C and +120°C permanently, with peaks up to +220°C.

ISO 9001:2015: Quality Management as a Foundation

While NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021 validates product performance, ISO 9001:2015 focuses on the manufacturing process. This international standard specifies requirements for a quality management system, applicable to organizations in all sectors.

ISO 9001 is the most widely used quality standard in the world, with more than one million certificates issued in 178 countries. First published in 1987, the 2015 version places emphasis on risk management, customer focus, and continuous improvement. Certification is obtained through an external audit by an independent body that assesses procedures, compliance, and management commitment. Certification follows a three-year cycle with annual interim audits and recertification in the third year.

For customers, ISO 9001 offers concrete benefits: traceability through batch numbers and material certificates, consistent quality through documented procedures, risk management through systematic problem identification, and continuous improvement through feedback loops.

KOZ Products is ISO 9001:2015 certified, guaranteeing traceability and consistent production processes. This certification supports the lifetime warranty through quality assurance from raw material procurement to finished product.

UL 94 V0: Flame Retardant Properties

UL 94 is a flame retardancy standard for polymeric materials used in electrical devices and appliances. The standard was developed by Underwriters Laboratories in the United States and is globally recognized. The system classifies materials from HB (horizontal burning, lowest level) to 5VA and 5VB (highest levels for extreme applications). The vertical burning classes V-2, V-1, and V0 are applied to standard polymeric components, with V0 representing the strictest classification and being most commonly required in safety-critical applications.

The test is performed on vertically mounted test specimens measuring 127 millimeters in length and 12.7 millimeters in width. A blue flame of 20 millimeters height is held against the bottom of the specimen for 10 seconds and then removed. If the specimen continues to burn, the flame is reapplied for 10 seconds after 30 seconds.

For V0 classification, the specimen must meet strict criteria. After each flame application, the material must self-extinguish within 10 seconds. The total burning time for 10 flame applications across five specimens may not exceed 50 seconds. The specimen must not produce flaming drips that ignite a layer of surgical cotton 300 millimeters below the specimen. After-glow from glowing material may not persist for more than 30 seconds after the second removal of the flame.

The V0 classification is essential in electrical installations because components are located near live parts where sparks can occur. Materials that are not self-extinguishing can allow a small spark to escalate into a larger fire hazard. Particularly relevant is the halogen-free nature of high-quality V0 materials. During fires, halogen-containing polymers produce toxic and corrosive gases. In tunnels, on ships, in data centers, and other environments where people must evacuate or where electronic equipment is being protected, halogen-free material is a critical safety requirement.

KOZ cable clamps are manufactured from glass-fiber reinforced polyamide certified according to UL 94 V0. The material is halogen-free, meaning it produces no chlorine- or bromine-containing gases in the event of fire. The self-extinguishing property ensures that a fire is not fed by the clamp material itself.

Lloyd’s Register Type Approval for Maritime Applications

Lloyd’s Register was founded in 1760 and is the oldest classification society for the maritime sector. The organization sets standards for ships, offshore platforms, and related components. Type Approval from Lloyd’s Register is globally recognized by shipping companies, platform operators, and national maritime authorities.

Type Approval requires that products be tested under conditions simulating maritime service. Fire behavior tests assess flame spread and smoke development when materials are exposed to fire situations. Salt spray tests simulate years of exposure to maritime atmospheres by subjecting components to a constant mist of salt solution for more than a thousand hours. Vibration tests validate that fasteners maintain their grip under the continuous vibrations typical of ship engines and offshore installations. Shock load tests simulate impacts that can occur during severe weather conditions or operational events.

KOZ Products has obtained Lloyd’s Register Type Approval for its cable clamps and blocks. This certification opens access to shipbuilding, offshore wind projects, and oil and gas platforms where Lloyd’s Register approval often forms a contractual requirement. The certification also satisfies requirements arising from International Maritime Organization regulations.

The Practical Value of Certifications

Insurers often apply lower premiums for installations in which exclusively certified components have been used. This reflects the lower risk profile of installations where products have been validated according to international standards. In the event of accidents, the use of certified components provides legal protection by demonstrating that due diligence was exercised in the selection of materials.

Tender documents for large projects often specify which certifications are required. Offshore installations, marine projects, tunnels, and data centers maintain strict compliance requirements. Suppliers who cannot demonstrate that their products meet specified standards are disqualified at an early stage. Verifying in advance that selected suppliers hold the required certifications prevents late disqualifications that cause project delays.

Certification is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. ISO 9001 requires annual audits and triennial recertification. Product certifications such as NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021 may require periodic retesting when production processes or materials change. This continuous monitoring ensures that quality does not degrade after initial certification has been achieved.

Products with multiple international certifications can be applied in diverse markets without additional approval processes. A cable clamp with NEN-EN-IEC certification (European), UL approval (North America), and Lloyd’s Register approval (maritime) can be supplied worldwide. For contractors and operators active in multiple regions, standardizing on a single supplier with multi-regional compliance significantly simplifies procurement and logistics.

Supplier Selection Criteria

When selecting cable clamp suppliers, it is essential to request complete certification documentation, not merely claims on websites or in brochures. Request copies of certificates and verify that they are valid. Check the scope of certificates to confirm that the specific product series under consideration are actually certified. Some manufacturers certify only representative models, meaning that other products in their portfolio may not have been validated.

Verify the validity of certificates and the accreditation of testing laboratories. A certificate issued by a non-accredited laboratory has limited value. Confirm that periodic recertification takes place and that certificates are current. Check traceability by requesting batch numbers and material certificates. Suppliers with ISO 9001 certification must be able to provide this documentation.

Validate the applicability of certifications to specific project requirements. A product certified for 50 kiloampere short-circuit current may be insufficient for an installation with expected fault currents of 80 kiloamperes. Test conditions must correspond to actual installation conditions.

KOZ Products offers certification for the complete portfolio from 11 to 160 millimeters according to NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021. ISO 9001:2015 certification guarantees internal process quality. UL 94 V0 and Lloyd’s Register Type Approval provide multi-sector suitability for applications ranging from industrial to maritime. Complete documentation packages are available for project approvals, accelerating the procurement process. The lifetime warranty is supported by certifications that guarantee continuous quality.

Sector-Specific Certification Requirements

In industrial and energy installations, NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021 forms the minimum requirement, while ISO 9001 is strongly recommended for supplier qualification. For offshore and maritime applications, Lloyd’s Register Type Approval is often contractually required, with NEN-EN-IEC as the baseline standard.

Tunnels and metro systems typically require UL 94 V0 certification where the halogen-free nature is critical due to smoke development in fires within enclosed spaces where evacuation must take place through tunnels. Data centers often apply a combination of NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021, UL 94 V0, and ISO 9001 because insurers require this triple certification for coverage.

Petrochemical installations require chemical resistance validation in addition to NEN-EN-IEC certification. The glass-fiber reinforced polyamide from KOZ is resistant to UV radiation, saltwater, ozone, industrial oils, fuels, and alkalis. In zones with explosion risk, additional ATEX certifications may be required for components.

The advantage of standardizing on a supplier that holds all primary certifications is the elimination of multi-vendor complexity. A single documentation package suffices for compliance verification across all project phases. Inventory management is simplified when a single product family covers all applications.

Certifications as a Safety Guarantee

Certifications for cable clamps are not a bureaucratic formality but essential safety evidence. The distinction between certified and non-certified products represents the difference between proven reliability under extreme conditions and unvalidated claims.

The KOZ Products portfolio includes full compliance with NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021 for short-circuit resistance, ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, UL 94 V0 for flame retardancy, and Lloyd’s Register Type Approval for maritime applications. For critical installations in data centers, offshore wind farms, industrial facilities, and transport infrastructure where safety is non-negotiable, certified solutions provide the assurance that projects require.

Certified cable clamps for critical installations: Cable clamps complying with NEN-EN-IEC 61914:2021 have been tested for short-circuit resistance at tens of thousands of amperes and electromagnetic forces up to hundreds of kilonewtons. Certifications such as ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, UL 94 V0 for flame retardancy, and Lloyd’s Register Type Approval for maritime applications guarantee multi-sector suitability. Complete documentation with batch numbers and test certificates is available for project approval in installations where safety and reliability are essential.
